What brings you here?
A good result starts with knowing what to treat
The scan supports the decisions behind your filler treatment, whether this is your first appointment or part of a longer history.
At a glance
Ultrasound-guided filler at a glance
Imaging adds information to the facial assessment and injection plan.
The result
Filler placed with your face in mind
The visible aim may be softer hollowing, better support or a more defined contour.
Ultrasound can help Dr Alex assess the layer he is treating and the position of a needle or cannula during guided placement. It can also help identify previous filler that needs to be considered before adding more.
The visible result comes from the filler treatment: the product, amount and placement chosen to suit your proportions. Sometimes the useful finding is that you need less filler than you expected, or a different treatment altogether.

Is it for you?
When ultrasound can add useful information
It is particularly relevant when anatomy or previous treatment makes a closer look worthwhile.
Choosing your treatment
The scan may change the recommendation
Ultrasound does not turn every concern into a reason for filler. Significant loose skin, persistent puffiness or an unresolved lump may need another approach first. Dr Alex will explain if treatment should be postponed, reduced or reconsidered.
How it works
Seeing the area before treating it
Ultrasound uses sound waves to form an image beneath the skin. It does not use ionising radiation.
A small probe is moved over the area with gel. The image can help show tissue layers and filler deposits; Doppler ultrasound adds information about blood flow.
Scanning before injection helps with planning. Scanning during injection can help track the needle or cannula and check its position. Dr Alex chooses the approach for the area and procedure, alongside the usual examination and injection precautions.

Why Dr Alex
Ultrasound alongside aesthetic judgement
Dr Alex contributed to the Aesthetics Journal feature 'Utilising Ultrasound in Aesthetics'. He also teaches doctors, dentists and nurses in aesthetic medicine in the UK and internationally.
His assessment combines what your face looks like, what the tissue feels like and what the scan can show. Those findings help him explain whether filler is useful, where it should be placed and how to work towards the result you want.

Added information, with the usual care still needed
Ultrasound scanning is non-invasive. The filler injections can still cause swelling, bruising, tenderness and temporary unevenness.
Possible side effects
Other possible filler problems include infection, persistent swelling, lumps, inflammatory reactions and migration. Rarely, filler can enter or block a blood vessel, causing skin injury, visual loss or neurological complications.
Ultrasound can help visualise anatomy and guide placement, but it cannot show every tiny vessel or make treatment risk-free. The scan, clinical judgement, injection technique and aftercare all have a role.
When to get urgent help
Contact the clinic immediately for severe or increasing pain, or skin that becomes unusually pale, grey, dusky or mottled. Do not wait for a routine review. Call 999 for any change in vision, severe eye pain, sudden weakness, difficulty speaking or breathing, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Increasing redness, heat, pus or fever also need prompt advice.
When treatment may need to wait
Elective filler treatment is postponed during pregnancy or breastfeeding and where there is active infection or significant inflammation. Allergies, previous filler reactions, immune conditions and medicines need assessment. An unresolved lump or swelling should be understood before adding more filler.
You can discuss the scan findings and take time to decide whether to proceed.
