Excessive sweating treatment at SONÜ

Botox for underarm sweating in Hale, Altrincham

Drier underarms, fewer sweat patches and more freedom to choose what you wear, without planning your day around a spare shirt.

You put on a clean top, leave the house and wonder how long it will stay dry. Perhaps you've tried stronger antiperspirants, learned which colours hide the patches, or kept a jacket on long after everyone else has taken theirs off.

Excessive underarm sweating can take up far more thought than it deserves. Botox can reduce the sweat produced in the treated area for several months, helping your clothes stay drier and making everyday situations less of a juggling act. Dr Alex will assess your sweating and explain whether treatment could give you that relief.

Everyday sweating

When sweat starts choosing your clothes

It doesn't have to be a hot day or a hard workout for excessive underarm sweating to be a nuisance.

You dress around the patches

You choose colours and fabrics for how well they disguise dampness. You'd like to wear the top you actually fancy, rather than the one that hides sweat best.

Antiperspirant is not doing enough

You've tried products designed to reduce sweating, but your underarms still get uncomfortably wet. You want to know what else can help.

You keep a spare shirt just in case

Work, social plans or an important event can involve checking, changing or keeping your arms close to your sides. You'd like sweating to take up less of your attention.

The difference day to day

Less checking, changing and covering up

A worthwhile result is one you notice when getting dressed or going about your day.

Reducing the amount of underarm sweat can mean fewer wet patches, fewer clothing changes and less need to keep a layer on to hide dampness. You may feel more comfortable choosing lighter colours or taking your jacket off.

The aim is a meaningful reduction in sweating, not a promise that the area will never feel damp. The effect is temporary, and treatment can be reconsidered when troublesome sweating returns.

When underarm sweating needs more than antiperspirant

The consultation looks at where you sweat, when it started and how much it affects you.

Sweating regularly disrupts your day
Damp patches and wet clothing are a repeated problem, even when you are not especially hot or active. You would like a treatment that reduces the sweating itself.
Stronger antiperspirants have not been enough
They may not control the problem adequately, or your skin may not tolerate them. Dr Alex can discuss whether injections are an appropriate next option.
The main problem is your underarms
This page is about excessive sweating in the armpits. Sweating over the whole body, or in several unrelated areas, may need a different assessment and treatment plan.

Checking the cause

New or widespread sweating needs assessment first

If sweating has started suddenly, happens at night, affects your whole body or comes with other symptoms, speak to your GP. Medicines and medical conditions can cause sweating too. Treating the underarms should not delay finding out why it has changed.

How it works

Turning down the signal to sweat

Botox temporarily blocks the nerve signals that tell sweat glands in the treated skin to produce sweat.

Small injections are spread across the underarm area. The treatment works at the sweat glands rather than by relaxing the muscles used to move your arms.

The glands are not removed or permanently switched off. Their activity gradually returns as the treatment wears off. Your body continues to sweat elsewhere.

Your appointment

A practical treatment for a practical problem

You'll have time to discuss what you've tried and what a useful improvement would mean for you.

Consultation

Talk through your sweating pattern

Dr Alex will ask where and when you sweat, how long it has been happening, treatments you've tried and any relevant symptoms or medicines.
Assessment

Check the area and suitability

The underarms are examined and the area needing treatment identified. Dr Alex will explain the expected response, comfort and aftercare before you decide.
Treatment

Small injections across the underarms

Botox is placed into the skin at a series of points. The injections can sting; tell Dr Alex about any concerns so comfort options can be discussed.
Afterwards

Look for a reduction over the following days

Improvement usually begins within the first week. Allow around two weeks to assess it, and follow the advice you receive about deodorant, exercise and care of the skin.

Why SONÜ

Medical assessment, with experience in toxin treatment

Dr Alex trains doctors, dentists and nurses in medical aesthetics and has presented clinical education on toxin at UK conferences. His wider professional work includes an international Key Opinion Leader and Advocate role for Evolus, a company supplying botulinum toxin treatments.

For sweating, the consultation starts with the symptom: where it happens, what you have already tried and whether there is a reason to investigate further. If the pattern suggests another cause, that needs assessment before treating the underarms.

You can explain the practical impact without having to play it down. Repeatedly changing clothes or worrying about damp patches is a good reason to ask what can be done.

Safety

What side effects should you know about?

The injections can cause temporary tenderness, bruising, small swellings or irritation in the underarm skin.

Possible side effects

Some people notice more sweating elsewhere. Unwanted muscle weakness and allergic reactions are also possible. Dr Alex will discuss your medical history, previous reactions and medicines before recommending treatment.

Contact the clinic if you have persistent pain, increasing redness or another unexpected change after treatment.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent medical help for difficulty swallowing or speaking, widespread weakness or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Call 999 for breathing difficulty or swelling of the tongue or throat.

When treatment should wait

An infection in the underarm skin needs to settle first. Treatment is generally deferred during pregnancy or breastfeeding. A previous serious reaction to botulinum toxin, certain nerve or muscle conditions and some medicines can affect suitability. Unexplained new or widespread sweating needs assessment of its cause.

You can discuss other options before deciding on injections.

Your questions

Questions about Botox for excessive sweating

The everyday questions, including deodorant, clothes and how long the relief lasts.

What is underarm hyperhidrosis?
It means excessive sweating in the armpits. You may sweat enough to soak clothing or disrupt ordinary activities even when your body doesn't need to cool down. The consultation helps establish the pattern and whether treatment is appropriate.
How quickly will underarm Botox work?
Improvement usually begins within the first week. Allow around two weeks to assess how much the sweating has reduced rather than expecting dry underarms as soon as the injections are finished.
How long does Botox for sweating last?
The usual guide is around 4-7 months. This can be longer than its effect on facial expression lines. Sweating gradually returns, and another treatment can be considered when it becomes troublesome again.
Will I stop sweating everywhere?
No. Treatment acts in the injected underarm skin, and your body continues to sweat elsewhere. It is not a treatment for whole-body sweating. Some people notice increased sweating in other areas afterwards.
Will I still need deodorant?
Possibly. Deodorant controls odour, while antiperspirant reduces sweat. Botox targets sweating, so it doesn't automatically replace every product you use. Follow your aftercare instructions about when to restart them on the treated skin.
Does it treat body odour too?
Reducing underarm moisture may help, but Botox is a treatment for excessive sweating rather than a guaranteed cure for odour. If smell is the main problem without much sweating, say so at consultation because the advice may be different.
Do the injections hurt?
The underarms are sensitive and a series of injections can sting. The discomfort is usually brief at each point. Discuss your concerns before treatment so Dr Alex can explain the available comfort options.
Should I shave or stop deodorant before the appointment?
You'll receive preparation advice, including when to shave and when to stop deodorant or antiperspirant. Avoid arriving with freshly irritated skin, and ask the clinic if you are unsure about a product or preparation step.
Can I go back to work or exercise afterwards?
Most people can return to ordinary work and daily activities. Exercise and heat exposure may need a short pause; follow the aftercare instructions for your treatment. Small marks or tenderness can occur at the injection points.
What if I sweat at night or all over my body?
That needs assessment of the cause, usually starting with your GP, especially if it is new or accompanied by other symptoms. Underarm injections treat a local problem and should not be used to overlook a wider one.
