CO2 skin tag removal

Skin tag removal in Hale, Altrincham

Remove bothersome skin tags for a smoother surface, with focused CO2 laser treatment carried out by Dr Alex.

Small skin tags can be surprisingly annoying. A necklace catches, a collar rubs, or you keep having to shave around the same little bump. You might simply prefer how your skin looks without it.

At SONÜ, Dr Alex removes suitable, confirmed skin tags with the SmartXide CO2 laser. He discusses removal and how the small treated area will heal. If you're unsure what a growth is, please see your GP or a dermatologist before booking.

What you might be noticing

A small tag that keeps making itself known

You don't need a dramatic reason to ask about removal. Everyday irritation or simply disliking the appearance can be enough.

It catches on clothes or jewellery

A collar, necklace or bra keeps rubbing the same spot. The tag may be tiny, but you notice it several times a day.

Shaving around it is a nuisance

You keep steering the razor around a small flap of skin, or accidentally catching it. You'd like a smoother area once the skin has healed.

You would rather it wasn't there

A tag on your neck or another visible area draws your attention in the mirror. It doesn't have to hurt for you to want to discuss having it removed.

The change to look for

Smoother skin where the tag used to be

Once the site has healed, the raised tag is no longer there to catch on clothing or interrupt the surface of the skin.

The tag itself is removed during treatment, but the skin underneath needs time to settle. A small pink or darker mark may remain while it heals. Dr Alex will explain what to expect in that particular area, including the possibility of a lasting mark or scar.

Is it right for you?

Is removal right for your skin tag?

This service is for confirmed skin tags. If you don't know what a bump is, your GP or a dermatologist should assess it before you book with SONÜ.

A confirmed skin tag
For a confirmed skin tag, Dr Alex assesses whether CO2 removal is appropriate. The size, attachment and position help determine the plan.
Appearance or repeated irritation
Removal may be worthwhile if the tag keeps catching or you dislike how it looks. If it isn't bothering you, a confirmed harmless tag can simply be left alone.
Able to care for the small wound
You'll need to avoid picking or rubbing the site while it heals and follow the advice on washing, dressings and sun protection. Factor that in around a holiday or special occasion.

Treatment scope

Skin tag removal only

Dr Alex offers removal of confirmed skin tags. He does not offer mole or wart assessment or removal, or a service to diagnose unidentified skin growths. If you're unsure what a bump is, please see your GP or a dermatologist before booking. A growth that is changing, bleeding unexpectedly or not healing should also be checked first.

How it works

Removing the tag with a focused laser

CO2 laser energy is absorbed by water in the tissue, allowing the tag to be removed in a controlled, localised treatment.

Dr Alex uses the DEKA SmartXide Punto to treat the selected growth. This is a different use of the laser from full-face resurfacing or collagen treatment. The aim is to remove the tag and allow the small site underneath it to heal.

Your appointment

What happens at a skin tag appointment?

You'll know which tags are being treated, the fee and the likely healing process before agreeing to removal.

Consultation

Discuss removal

For confirmed skin tags, Dr Alex assesses suitability for removal and asks about your health, medicines and previous healing. Any uncertain, changing or unexpectedly bleeding growth should be checked by your GP or a dermatologist before this appointment.
Preparation

Agree the treatment

He'll confirm which skin tags are suitable for removal and discuss numbing and eye protection where relevant. An unidentified growth will not be treated; it needs assessment by your GP or a dermatologist.
CO2 laser

Remove the selected tag

The laser is directed at the tag. You may notice warmth or stinging, depending on the site and numbing used. Treatment time depends on the size, position and number being removed.
Healing

Care for the small treated site

The area may be tender or crusted afterwards. Follow your instructions for cleaning and any ointment or dressing, and don't pick the surface. You'll be told when shaving, make-up and your usual activities are appropriate.

Why Dr Alex

Why choose Dr Alex for skin tag removal?

Dr Alex is a medical doctor with experience in CO2 laser treatment, including presenting and demonstrating the treatment internationally. His CO2 work won Best SmartXide Transformation at the Lynton Excellence Awards 2023.

For confirmed skin tags, he'll assess whether removal is straightforward, whether the position needs extra care and what mark may be left as the skin heals. This is a removal service, not a clinic for diagnosing unidentified skin lesions.

Safety and aftercare

Giving the skin time to heal

A small sore area, tenderness, redness or a crust can follow removal. Keep the site protected from rubbing and follow the aftercare while the surface heals.

Possible side effects

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, burns, delayed healing, a lasting scar or a lighter or darker patch. Pigment changes are more likely in darker skin. Removing a small tag is still a skin procedure, so the expected result and healing matter.

When to get urgent help

Contact the clinic promptly if pain or swelling increases, redness spreads, the area produces pus, you develop a fever or bleeding does not stop with firm pressure. If the clinic is unavailable, seek urgent medical advice through NHS 111. Heavy bleeding needs urgent assessment.

When removal may need to wait

Tell Dr Alex about blood-thinning medicines, problems with healing, raised scars, active infection, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Don't stop prescribed medicines yourself. A changing or unexplained growth must be checked by your GP or a dermatologist before you book, even if you have other familiar skin tags.

You'll receive aftercare instructions and advice on contacting the clinic if the site isn't settling as expected.

Your questions

More about skin tag removal

Practical answers before you decide to have a tag removed.

What if I'm not sure it's a skin tag?
Please have it checked by your GP or a dermatologist before booking removal. SONÜ's appointment is to assess suitability for removing a confirmed skin tag, rather than to diagnose an unidentified bump.
Do skin tags have to be removed?
No. A confirmed skin tag is harmless and can be left alone. Removal is an option if it catches, rubs or bothers you because of how it looks. It is your choice whether that makes treatment worthwhile.
Will removal hurt?
Dr Alex will discuss numbing before treatment. The method depends on the size and location of the tag. You may still feel warmth or a brief sting, and the site can be tender afterwards. Tell him if you're particularly worried about discomfort.
Will it leave a scar?
A lasting mark or small scar is possible. The site may initially be pink or darker than the surrounding skin, and colour can take longer to settle than the surface takes to heal. Your skin type, the tag's attachment and its location all influence the likely result.
How long will it take to heal?
Dr Alex will give you an estimate for the area treated. A small crust or sore patch may remain while the skin closes, even when you feel ready to get on with your day. Keep make-up and a razor off an unhealed site, and follow the advice on friction, swimming and exercise.
Can several tags be removed at once?
That can be considered after assessment. Show Dr Alex all the areas bothering you so he can agree which tags to treat together and confirm the total fee.
Will the skin tag grow back?
A completely removed tag does not usually return, although a residual part can remain and need review. You can also develop new skin tags in the same general area or elsewhere. Removing existing tags does not prevent new ones.
Can you remove a tag close to my eye?
The exact position needs checking before treatment can be offered. A tag beside the eye is different from one on the eyelid margin, and the appropriate protection and approach depend on where it sits. Mention the location when booking; some locations may need removal by a specialist such as an ophthalmologist or dermatologist.
Is removal suitable for darker skin?
It may be, but darker or lighter marks can be more noticeable after treatment. Dr Alex will discuss this with you and assess whether the expected improvement is worth that risk for the tag and area you want treated.
Can I use a home removal kit instead?
It is better to have the growth identified first. Cutting, tying off or applying strong products yourself can lead to bleeding, infection or scarring, and wart treatments can damage the skin around a tag. An uncertain or changing bump needs assessment by your GP or a dermatologist.
