For visible vessels on the nose and cheeks

IPL facial thread vein treatment in Hale, Altrincham

Reduce the little red veins that keep showing through. IPL targets small superficial facial blood vessels, helping your skin look more even with less redness to cover.

You might call them thread veins, spider veins or broken capillaries. They can gather around the nostrils or spread across the cheeks, staying visible even when you're not hot or flushed. Light treatments such as IPL and BBL are used to reduce these vessels. At SONÜ, Dr Alex will assess the veins you'd like to treat and explain what IPL could do for you.

Sound familiar?

Small veins can be surprisingly noticeable

Sometimes it's just one patch that catches your eye when you look in the mirror.

Red lines around your nose

Fine vessels at the sides of the nose can stay visible after the rest of your complexion has settled. A dab of concealer becomes part of the routine.

Little branches across your cheeks

Up close, the redness looks like a network of tiny lines. You'd like those vessels to be less obvious, especially on days without makeup.

Redness that doesn't fully go away

Your face cools down after exercise or a hot drink, but some colour remains. Visible vessels may be contributing to that background redness.

What could change?

Less red veining, a more even finish

The aim is to make the visible vessels less obvious, so you spend less time trying to cover them.

Some small vessels respond more readily than others, and a course may be needed for a network across the cheeks or nose. As they fade, the skin can look less red overall. If rosacea is also part of your concern, the plan can include advice on the symptoms that light treatment alone won't address.

The location and type of vessel matter

This page is about small facial vessels. Dr Alex will discuss which ones are likely to respond to IPL.

Fine red facial vessels
Small, superficial vessels around the nose and cheeks are common treatment targets. Your skin colour, recent sun exposure and vessel pattern help guide the plan.
Vessels with background redness
IPL may help with visible vessels and some persistent redness together. If there are rosacea spots, irritation or frequent flushing too, those may need additional care.
Leg veins or larger blue veins
These need a separate assessment and may be better suited to treatments such as a vascular laser or sclerotherapy. A facial IPL appointment is not a leg-vein treatment.

Choosing the target

Redness and visible veins aren't always the same thing

If you mainly notice flushing, burning or skin sensitivity, say so. Those details help Dr Alex judge whether the main issue is a visible vessel, an ongoing skin condition or both, and whether IPL is the right place to start.

How it works

Light absorbed by the blood in the vessel

IPL delivers filtered pulses of light. The haemoglobin in red blood cells absorbs the light, creating heat inside the targeted small vessel.

That heat can close the vessel, which the body then gradually clears. The intention is to reduce the visible red line while keeping the surrounding skin intact. IPL and BBL use this light-based principle for suitable vascular concerns; treatment settings are chosen for your skin and the vessels being addressed.

Your treatment

What happens at the appointment

You can point out the exact lines that bother you. Photographs can help keep track of the changes as treatment progresses.

Before treatment

Assess the vessels

Discuss the areas, any flushing or rosacea symptoms, your medical history and your skin routine. Dr Alex will explain whether IPL is likely to be useful.
Patch test

Check your skin's response

A small test area is treated before a wider session. The team will explain preparation, timing and what reactions to report.
At your session

Treat the selected area

Your skin is prepared and your eyes protected. The light pulses can feel like quick hot pinpricks. Tell the team if you need a pause or anything feels uncomfortable.
After your skin settles

Review the change

Follow your aftercare, avoid tanning and allow time for the treated vessels to fade. Further treatment can then focus on what remains visible.

Why Dr Alex

A useful distinction between veins and redness

Dr Alex is a medical doctor and founder of SONÜ. He'll listen to what you notice day to day, as well as looking at the visible vessels. His assessment considers skin sensitivity, flushing and any previous treatment, so the plan addresses the concern that brought you in. He'll also explain when a different type of treatment or a separate assessment is more appropriate.

Safety and aftercare

Allow a little time for the skin to settle

Mild redness, warmth or swelling can occur after IPL. Treated vessels may look darker initially, and occasional bruising is possible.

Possible side effects

Less common risks include burns, blisters, colour changes and scarring. Follow your individual advice about skincare, sun protection, exercise and heat while the area settles. Tell the team about light sensitivity, medicines, cold sores and any recent skin treatment before your appointment.

When to get urgent help

Contact the clinic promptly for worsening pain, blisters, spreading redness or signs of infection. Eye pain or any change in vision needs urgent medical assessment. If the clinic is closed and you need advice, contact NHS 111.

When IPL may not be suitable

A recent tan, sunburn, infection or active skin flare may mean postponing treatment. Darker skin, some medicines and certain medical conditions can make another approach preferable. New or unusual red skin lesions need GP or dermatology assessment; SONÜ doesn't offer skin-lesion diagnosis.

Your skin response and the treatment area are checked before a course is agreed.

Your questions

Facial thread veins: the practical details

Including the difference between facial vessels, rosacea redness and veins on the legs.

Are thread veins the same as broken capillaries?
People often use those terms for the same tiny visible facial vessels. Usually the vessels are widened, rather than broken and leaking. You may also hear the medical term telangiectasia. IPL can help reduce the appearance of suitable superficial vessels.
Can you treat veins around my nose?
Small vessels around the nose are a common reason to consider IPL. Some can be more persistent than others, so Dr Alex will assess the area and explain what to expect. Treatment is planned around the location, your skin and the vessels themselves.
Is this similar to BBL treatment for redness?
Yes. BBL, or BroadBand Light, is Sciton's branded form of IPL. Both use light to target concerns such as visible vessels and redness. Dr Alex can assess whether IPL is suited to the facial veins or red areas you'd like to improve.
Will the veins disappear immediately?
A vessel may change appearance during treatment, but the overall result needs time to settle. Some lines may temporarily look darker before fading. Review over the following weeks gives a better picture of the improvement than judging the skin straight after a session.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on how many vessels there are, their size and how they respond. Some small areas need fewer sessions; more widespread or persistent veins may need a course. The plan is reviewed as you go, with appointments spaced several weeks apart.
Can IPL stop me flushing?
IPL can reduce visible vessels and some background redness. Flushing has other triggers too, so it may continue even when the skin looks more even between episodes. If flushing, burning or rosacea is the main problem, Dr Alex will discuss the wider treatment options.
Can the thread veins come back?
Treated vessels may stay less visible, but some can recur and new ones can develop. Sun damage and underlying skin conditions can contribute. Good skin care and sun protection help, and further treatment can be considered if new veins bother you.
Can I have my leg spider veins treated at the same appointment?
Leg veins need a different assessment and may need another type of treatment. This service is for facial vessels. Contact the team with the area you want help with before booking so you can be directed appropriately.
Will I be bruised or need time off work?
Most people can carry on with normal activities, though temporary redness, swelling, darker vessels or occasional bruising may be visible. If you have an important event coming up, mention it when planning treatment so there's time for your skin to settle.
Is it painful, and are needles involved?
IPL doesn't involve injecting into the veins. The pulses can feel like brief hot pinpricks or an elastic-band flick. Comfort varies around the face, and the team can pause and check the settings if you need them to.
