HIFU double-chin reduction

HIFU double-chin treatment in Hale, Altrincham

Less fullness beneath the chin and firmer skin, without needles, injections or downtime to plan around.

You catch a side-on photo and notice the area under your chin before anything else. Perhaps there's a small pocket of fat that has always been there, or the skin has started to hang a little more loosely.

HIFU uses focused ultrasound to reduce suitable local fat and tighten the skin, helping improve the outline between your chin and neck. It's often called a 'lunchtime' treatment: you can get back to work, meet a friend or carry on with your day straight afterwards.

What you might be noticing

The bit beneath your chin keeps getting your attention

It might show most in profile, on a video call or when someone else takes the photo.

A pocket that stays put

You're happy enough with your weight, but there's still a little fullness under the chin. You'd like to know whether a treatment can address that area directly.

The skin has started to sag

The outline used to look firmer. Now the skin beneath your chin folds or hangs more loosely, even if there hasn't been much change in your weight.

Chin and neck seem to merge

From the side, the angle between your chin and neck looks less defined. You're interested in improving that outline without adding anything to your face.

The change to look for

A more defined chin-to-neck outline

For the right starting point, reducing a small pocket of fat and firming the skin can make the area look less heavy. Your profile can become more defined as the result develops.

Dr Alex may plan treatment mainly for skin tightening, mainly for suitable fat reduction, or for both. These need different choices of depth and settings. He'll explain the change he would aim for before you decide to go ahead.

✓

✓

Less fullness beneath the chin where a small pocket of fat is contributing.

✓

Firmer skin where mild sagging is affecting the outline.

✓

A more noticeable angle between the chin and neck.

✓

Gradual contour improvement without adding filler.

Is it right for you?

Is it fat, loose skin or the shape of your chin?

Those can look similar in a photograph, but treating them in the same way won't give the same result.

A suitable local pocket of fat
HIFU may help when a limited amount of fat beneath the chin is contributing to the fullness. Dr Alex checks the tissue rather than assuming every double chin needs fat reduction.
Mild skin looseness
If the skin is starting to sag, collagen stimulation can help it feel firmer and improve the outline. This may be useful on its own or alongside a plan for suitable local fat.
A stable weight and time to see a change
This is a contouring treatment, not a way to lose weight. It makes most sense when you're looking for a change in one area and can allow time for the result to develop.

When another approach may help more

A small chin or a lot of loose skin changes the plan

HIFU cannot bring a small or recessed chin forward, remove a large fold of skin or replace surgical fat removal. If one of those is the main reason for your profile, Dr Alex will explain which alternatives are more likely to make the difference you want.

How it works

Focused ultrasound beneath the skin

HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. It creates small areas of heat at chosen depths beneath the surface.

For tightening, that controlled heating encourages new collagen, which helps the tissue become firmer. Where fat reduction is planned, the energy targets the selected fat beneath the chin. Dr Alex chooses the depth to suit the tissue and the change he wants to achieve. The handpiece stays on the skin; nothing is injected.

Dr Alex uses HIFU systems including Focus Dual, Microson Pen and Ultline. He'll explain which device suits the area and the aim of your treatment.

Your appointment

Planning treatment around your profile

You don't need to decide whether you need fat reduction or tightening before you come in. Bring the change you've noticed and what you'd like to improve.

Consultation

Examine the chin and neck

Dr Alex looks at the area from different angles and assesses the fat, skin and chin shape. He asks about your health, previous treatments and any implants before explaining the likely benefit and fee.
Treatment planning

Agree the areas and settings

He identifies where tightening or fat reduction is appropriate and which structures need to be avoided. You'll discuss comfort and the expected course before treatment starts.
Treatment

Deliver the ultrasound

Gel helps the handpiece make contact with the skin. As it moves over the planned area, you may feel brief heat, tingling or a deeper ache. Tell Dr Alex how it feels so he can respond to your comfort.
After treatment

Carry on, then allow time for change

You can usually return to your normal plans, following the aftercare advice. The area may feel tender even when it looks normal. Results are reviewed as they develop over the following months.

Why Dr Alex

Why choose Dr Alex for under-chin HIFU?

Dr Alex is a Key Opinion Leader for Eunsung, the manufacturer behind Focus Dual, and teaches medical professionals about HIFU internationally. He has presented on HIFU at IMCAS World Congress in Paris.

His plan starts with what is creating the double-chin appearance. Fat reduction is useful in the right place, but removing fat isn't the answer to every loose neck or less-defined profile. He'll explain what he would target and what HIFU is unlikely to change.

Safety and aftercare

What to expect afterwards

Temporary redness, tenderness or swelling can occur. Dr Alex usually finds little disruption to normal plans; occasional raised red or scratch-like marks can take a day or two to settle.

Possible side effects

Burns, persistent changes in sensation, nerve injury and unwanted fat loss are possible. An uneven contour can occur if too much fat is lost or the tissue responds unevenly. The planned depth and treatment area are important parts of the assessment.

When to get urgent help

Contact the clinic promptly for severe or worsening pain, blisters, skin damage, persistent numbness or new weakness affecting your smile. If you cannot reach the clinic, seek urgent medical advice through NHS 111. Rapid swelling with difficulty breathing or swallowing needs emergency help; call 999.

When treatment may not be suitable

Tell Dr Alex about pregnancy or breastfeeding, implanted electronic devices, metal implants in the area, previous surgery, fillers or threads, altered sensation and skin infection. If you have a new or unexplained lump or swelling in your neck, see your GP before booking cosmetic treatment.

You'll receive aftercare advice and know how to contact the clinic if something doesn't settle as expected.

Your questions

More about HIFU for a double chin

The practical questions when you're considering treatment beneath the chin.

Does HIFU reduce fat or just tighten skin?
It can do either, depending on the treatment depth, settings and the tissue being treated. Dr Alex uses it for suitable local fat beneath the chin as well as skin tightening. Your plan should match what is actually causing the fullness.
Can it help if I am already slim?
Possibly. A local pocket of fat or loose skin can still affect your profile. A small or recessed chin can also make the area look fuller, and HIFU doesn't change the underlying bone. The examination helps work out which factor matters most for you.
Will it get rid of my double chin completely?
The aim is a worthwhile improvement in contour, not a guarantee of removing every bit of fullness. A larger fat deposit or substantial loose skin may respond better to another approach. Dr Alex will discuss the scale of change you can realistically expect.
How soon will I see a difference?
Some people feel firmer or notice a little tightening straight away. The main improvement develops over about 3-6 months as the treated tissue responds and new collagen forms. A photograph taken immediately afterwards won't show the final result.
How many treatments will I need?
Dr Alex often recommends three sessions where appropriate, with at least a month between them. One treatment can still help. The recommendation depends on your starting point and the improvement you want; there isn't a compulsory course for everyone.
Does it hurt?
You may feel brief heat, tingling or a deeper ache with the pulses. Dr Alex generally finds the discomfort manageable, but the sensation varies across the area. You can tell him if a particular spot feels too uncomfortable.
Can I go back to work afterwards?
Yes, you can normally go straight back to work or your usual plans. That's the appeal of a 'lunchtime' treatment: no injections and no recovery days to book off. Mild redness or tenderness can occur, and you'll receive aftercare advice before you leave.
How does it compare with fat-dissolving injections?
Dr Alex generally finds that fat-dissolving injections reduce more fat per session than HIFU. They may therefore suit a larger pocket of fat and give a noticeable reduction sooner, although swelling after the injections can temporarily hide that change. HIFU is a needle-free option with no downtime to plan around, and can also tighten loose skin. He'll help you choose based on how much fat there is, your skin and the result you want.
Will the result last if my weight changes?
Weight changes can alter the amount of fullness beneath the chin, and the skin continues to age. Keeping your weight reasonably stable helps you judge and maintain the contour improvement. Further treatment is considered according to how the area changes, rather than on an automatic maintenance schedule.
Can my jawline or neck be treated at the same time?
They can be included where suitable, but they aren't automatically part of an under-chin treatment. Dr Alex will agree the areas, explain whether the aim is tightening or fat reduction in each and confirm the full fee.
