Less redness, more even skin

IPL for redness and rosacea in Hale, Altrincham

Reduce persistent redness across your cheeks and nose with IPL, helping your skin look calmer and more even so you can spend less time covering it up.

You can be perfectly comfortable and still look as though you've just rushed up three flights of stairs. If the colour stays long after the heat, exercise or embarrassment has passed, skincare alone may not shift it.

IPL uses pulses of light to target the small vessels contributing to persistent facial redness. It can reduce that background pink or red colour and visible thread veins, helping your complexion look more even. Often discussed alongside BBL, it's an option for the visible redness associated with rosacea.

Does this sound familiar?

When the redness hangs around

Rosacea can involve several symptoms. This treatment focuses on the redness you can see, especially between flushes.

Your cheeks always look pink or red

Even on a quiet day, there's colour across your cheeks or nose that never quite settles. You'd like your skin to look calmer without relying on colour-correcting makeup.

People think you look hot or embarrassed

You aren't either, but your face is telling a different story. A more even complexion can mean fewer moments of wondering how red you look.

The tiny red lines are becoming more obvious

Small vessels around your nose and cheeks stand out against the background redness. You may notice them more after removing makeup or looking in daylight.

Maintenance
May be helpful
Rosacea can remain active, so further treatment may be useful if redness returns.

What can improve?

Less background redness, a calmer-looking complexion

The aim is to reduce the colour that's there even when you aren't actively flushing.

As treated vessels fade, the cheeks and nose can look less red and individual thread veins may become less noticeable. That can make it easier to wear lighter coverage, or feel happier leaving makeup off.

IPL helps manage the visible vascular part of rosacea. It doesn't cure the condition, and flushing can still happen. Gentle skincare, sun protection and any prescribed treatment continue to play a part in keeping your skin settled.

Is IPL right for you?

When light treatment can help

A consultation helps separate treatable vascular redness from an irritated rash or another skin problem.

Redness remains between flare-ups
You have a constant background colour as well as times when your face flushes. IPL is most useful for the persistent redness and visible vessels.
Skincare has helped, but the colour remains
Your skin may feel more comfortable on a gentle routine while still looking red. Visible vessels often need a different approach from dryness or irritation.
You want to build on your current care
You may already use prescribed treatment for rosacea. IPL can be considered alongside it when the visible redness remains a concern.

The rest of your rosacea care

What if your skin is sore, bumpy or flaring?

Spots, burning and an irritated skin barrier may need other treatment before IPL. If the diagnosis is uncertain, your GP or dermatologist can help establish what's causing the redness. We won't assume every red face is rosacea or that light treatment is the answer to every symptom.

How it works

Targeting the vessels behind the redness

IPL light is absorbed by haemoglobin, the red pigment in blood within small vessels close to the skin surface.

This produces controlled heat in the targeted vessels, which can then close and gradually become less visible. Treating several small vessels across an area can reduce the overall red colour, as well as individual thread veins.

Settings are chosen for your skin and the vessels being treated. Treatment works beneath the surface without peeling the skin.

Your appointment

A plan for your skin, including its sensitive days

Tell us how your redness behaves, not just how it looks on the day you visit.

Consultation

Talk through the redness

We'll ask about flushing, spots, stinging, eye symptoms, triggers and any diagnosis or prescribed treatment. Photos of a typical flare can help if your skin happens to be calmer that day.
Before treatment

Check readiness and test the skin

We review medicines, recent tanning and skin irritation, then arrange a patch test. If your skin needs to settle first, we'll explain what needs addressing before proceeding.
Your IPL session

Treat the agreed areas

Protective eyewear stays on throughout. The handpiece delivers brief pulses over the treatment area, which can feel like warm flicks against the skin. We can pause whenever you need.
Between sessions

Keep aftercare simple

Follow your cooling, skincare and SPF advice, and avoid the heat or activities we've asked you to pause initially. We'll review persistent redness and any flare-ups before further treatment.

Why Dr Alex

Why choose Dr Alex for redness treatment?

Dr Alex is a medical doctor with experience across injectable, laser and light-based treatments. He'll ask what bothers you most: constant redness, individual vessels, sore skin or several concerns together.

His recommendation can include IPL, a change in timing, or medical treatment elsewhere before a cosmetic procedure. He'll also take your current prescriptions into account, so the plan fits the care you're already receiving. The goal is a meaningful improvement in the redness that bothers you.

Safety and aftercare

Looking after redness-prone skin

IPL can temporarily make skin look redder before it improves. Mild warmth and swelling can also occur.

Possible side effects

Less common risks include blistering, burns, pigment changes and scarring. We assess your skin colour, sensitivity and sun exposure, and use eye protection throughout. Tell us about medicines, cold sores and previous reactions to skin treatments.

A tan or an active irritated flare can make treatment less suitable. Follow the preparation and aftercare advice, and avoid adding strong skincare products while your skin is settling.

When to get urgent help

Contact the clinic promptly for blistering, worsening pain or marked swelling after IPL. If rosacea is accompanied by a painful or red eye, blurred vision, light sensitivity or a gritty eye, seek an urgent GP appointment or contact NHS 111. Don't wait for your next skin appointment.

When another assessment comes first

An unexplained rash, active skin infection or significant inflammation needs assessment before IPL. Treatment may also need to wait because of a recent tan, pregnancy, light-sensitive conditions or certain medicines. New or changing moles and other uncertain skin lesions should be assessed by your GP or dermatologist; SONÜ does not diagnose skin lesions.

We'll explain the options, and you can take time to decide whether treatment feels right.

Your questions

IPL and rosacea: what patients want to know

These answers focus on what light treatment can change and how it fits around everyday life.

Can IPL cure rosacea?
No, but it can reduce the persistent redness and visible vessels that make rosacea noticeable. The underlying tendency to flare remains. Think of IPL as one way to manage the visible symptoms alongside skincare and any medical treatment you need.
Will it stop me flushing?
Some people find flushing less troublesome, but it is harder to predict than improvement in constant redness. If your face looks normal between brief flushes, we'll discuss that carefully before recommending a course. IPL can't guarantee that heat, exercise or stress will stop making you red.
Will IPL help rosacea spots as well?
Its main role here is treating redness and small vessels. Rosacea bumps and pustules may need prescription creams or tablets. If these are prominent, getting the inflammation under control may be the first step before treating the remaining colour.
Is BBL used for rosacea too?
Yes. BBL, or BroadBand Light, is Sciton's branded form of IPL and is also used to treat vascular redness. The key question is whether your redness is the type likely to respond to light treatment and how it fits with the rest of your rosacea care.
How many sessions will I need?
Several treatments are often needed, usually spaced weeks apart. The amount of redness, vessel pattern and your skin's response guide the plan. We'll review progress during the course and discuss maintenance only if the colour returns enough to bother you.
Will I be redder afterwards?
Temporarily, yes, you may look more flushed and have some swelling. Many people carry on with normal daily activities, but allow some flexibility around important events. We'll explain what to expect from your settings and when you can resume makeup and exercise.
Can I have IPL if my skin is sensitive or darker?
Sensitive skin needs assessment, especially if it is actively sore or reacting to products. On darker skin, the light can also interact with natural pigment, increasing the risk of colour changes. We assess suitability and patch-test rather than assume IPL is right for every skin tone.
Can I keep using my rosacea medication?
Tell us exactly what you use, including creams, tablets and supplements. Some medicines affect light sensitivity, and irritated skin may need time to settle. Don't stop a prescription yourself; we'll explain any changes or contact with your prescriber needed before treatment.
Can IPL affect facial hair or my beard?
It can. IPL can also target pigment in hair follicles, so hair in the treated area may be affected. Tell us if preserving your beard or other facial hair is important so we can discuss treatment areas and alternatives before proceeding.
Is there anything I can do to help the results last?
Use a gentle skincare routine and daily SPF, continue prescribed care, and notice your own triggers. Avoiding things that reliably cause a flare can help, but you don't need to assume every possible rosacea trigger applies to you. Further IPL may be useful if persistent redness builds again.

Your next step
