Pelvic floor treatment for men

EMSELLA for men in Hale, Altrincham

Fewer leaks. More confidence getting on with your day. EMSELLA strengthens the pelvic floor muscles that help you control your bladder, while you sit fully clothed on a treatment chair.

A leak when you stand up, a pad for a long walk, a change of clothes just in case. These things can take up more of your day than you'd like, particularly after prostate surgery. EMSELLA offers a non-surgical way to work on pelvic floor strength, with no needles, no internal probe and no downtime. At SONÜ, Dr Alex will help you find out whether it's a useful next step for your symptoms.

Sound familiar?

When leaks start deciding what you do

You don't have to be leaking all the time for it to be worth asking about treatment.

Getting up, coughing or bending

A small movement can be enough. You might be dry while sitting down, then leak as you stand or start walking.

Still using pads after prostate surgery

You've been doing your exercises, but a day out still involves spare pads and checking where the toilets are. You'd like to know what else might help.

Thinking twice about exercise

A round of golf, a gym session or a longer walk feels less straightforward when you're wondering whether you'll leak. Better control could make those plans feel easier again.

What could change?

Less planning around your bladder

The aim is better control when you're moving about, so leaks take up less space in your day.

Progress might mean fewer wet patches, needing to change a pad less often or feeling happier staying out for longer. After prostatectomy, recovery also depends on the operation and how the muscles and nerves are healing. EMSELLA can be considered as part of that recovery plan, alongside pelvic floor exercises and your existing care.

Is it right for you?

Start with the kind of leakage you have

Dr Alex will ask when you leak, what you've already tried and whether you've had prostate treatment.

Leaks with movement or effort
EMSELLA may help when pelvic floor weakness contributes to leaks with coughing, lifting or getting up from a chair.
Leakage after prostatectomy
It may be an option once your recovery and treatment plan allow it. Bring details of your surgery and any ongoing urology care so the timing can be checked properly.
Urgency, pain or trouble emptying
A sudden need to go, pelvic pain or a poor stream can have a different cause. Those symptoms may need GP, urology or pelvic-health assessment before a strengthening course.

Your recovery

There is no need to struggle through this quietly

If leaks are persistent or substantial, keep your urology or continence team involved. They can discuss the full range of options, including physiotherapy and further treatment. EMSELLA can sit alongside appropriate care; you don't have to choose between asking about the chair and getting that support.

How it works

A muscle workout, seated and fully clothed

EMSELLA uses electromagnetic energy to make the pelvic floor muscles contract repeatedly. These muscles help support the bladder and control urine flow.

The technology is called HIFEM. You'll feel a series of strong contractions and tapping sensations through the seat as the muscles work and relax. The intensity is adjusted for you. Over a course, the aim is to improve muscle strength and control, helping the pelvic floor do its job more effectively.

Your appointments

What happens when you come in

There's nothing you need to perform or get right on the chair. The team will help you find the correct sitting position.

Before treatment

Talk through your symptoms

Discuss your leaks, medical history, prostate surgery and current exercises. Any implants or devices must be checked before treatment is arranged.
At your session

Get settled on the chair

Wear comfortable clothing and follow the team's instructions about metal items. You stay dressed, with your feet supported and the seat positioned to target the pelvic floor.
About 28 minutes

Let the muscles work

The contractions build as the intensity is adjusted. Tell the team how it feels; it should be tolerable, and treatment can be paused if needed.
During and after your course

Review the difference

Notice when leaks happen and how often you change pads. Those practical changes help guide review and whether further sessions would be useful.

Why Dr Alex

A straightforward conversation about a personal problem

Dr Alex is a medical doctor and founder of SONÜ. He'll take your symptoms seriously, explain where EMSELLA may help and be clear when another assessment would be more useful. If you've had prostate surgery, your recovery and ongoing care shape the plan. He can also discuss Core2Floor, which combines abdominal EMSCULPT and EMSELLA when both core and pelvic floor strengthening are relevant.

Safety and aftercare

What to know before you start

Most people can carry on with their day after EMSELLA. The contractions can feel unusual at first, and you may notice temporary muscle tiredness or an ache afterwards.

Possible side effects

Tell the team about pain, new urinary symptoms or any change in your health during the course. Keep doing the exercises recommended by your continence team, unless they've advised otherwise. More strengthening isn't always helpful when pelvic muscles are already painful or overactive.

When to get urgent help

If you suddenly cannot pass urine, particularly with lower abdominal pain, seek urgent medical help. Blood in your urine, fever with urinary symptoms or new severe pain also needs prompt medical advice; don't wait for your next EMSELLA appointment.

When treatment needs a different plan

A pacemaker, implanted electronic device or metal in the treatment area may rule out EMSELLA. Bring implant details, including hip replacements and any continence devices. Recent surgery, active pelvic cancer treatment, infection or a catheter require medical review before treatment can be considered.

Your medical history and device compatibility are checked before a course is agreed.

Your questions

EMSELLA for men: useful things to know

From prostate surgery to what to wear, here's what patients often want to know before booking.

Can men have EMSELLA?
Yes. EMSELLA is used for both men and women to strengthen weak pelvic floor muscles and help with urinary incontinence. Your symptoms and medical history determine whether it's suitable for you.
Can EMSELLA help with leaks after prostatectomy?
It may help suitable men reduce leakage after prostate removal by working on pelvic floor strength and control. It won't suit every cause or degree of leakage, so Dr Alex will look at your recovery and existing treatment before recommending a course.
How soon after prostate surgery can treatment start?
That depends on your recovery and your surgeon's advice. There isn't one start date that suits everyone. Let the team know your operation date, whether you still have a catheter and whether further treatment is planned, so suitability can be checked before you book sessions.
Do I have to undress or have anything inserted?
No. You stay fully clothed on the chair, and EMSELLA doesn't use an internal probe. Comfortable clothes are best. The team will explain what to remove from your pockets and check any metal fastenings or implants.
Does it hurt?
You'll feel strong muscle contractions and a tapping or lifting sensation through the seat. It can feel odd at first, but the intensity is adjusted gradually. Tell the team if anything feels painful so they can pause or change the treatment.
When might I notice fewer leaks?
Changes may become noticeable during the course or in the weeks afterwards. The useful signs are practical ones: fewer leaks, drier pads or more confidence on a walk. We'll review those changes with you as the course progresses.
Do I still need to do pelvic floor exercises?
Yes, keep following your rehabilitation advice. EMSELLA adds repeated muscle stimulation, while exercises help you practise control in everyday life. A pelvic-health physiotherapist or continence adviser can help if you're unsure whether you're squeezing and relaxing the right muscles.
Will the results last, or will I need top-ups?
Your response, ongoing recovery and pelvic floor habits all matter. Some men may benefit from further treatment, but there's no automatic top-up schedule for everyone. We'll discuss maintenance after reviewing what has changed for you.
Can it help erections as well as bladder control?
Pelvic floor muscles have a role in sexual function, but erection problems can also involve nerves, blood flow, medicines and the effects of prostate treatment. If erections are your main concern, speak to your GP or urology team about targeted treatment. This EMSELLA plan is focused on urinary control.
What is Core2Floor?
Core2Floor combines EMSELLA for the pelvic floor with EMSCULPT for the abdominal muscles. It may be worth discussing if you'd like to work on core strength as well as pelvic floor strength. Dr Alex will assess both areas and explain whether the combination makes sense for you.
