HIFU for jowls and jawline

HIFU for jowls in Hale, Altrincham

Firmer skin and a more defined jawline, without needles, injections or downtime to plan around.

Your jawline used to have a more distinct edge. Now there are little overhangs beside the chin, or the lower face looks heavier in photographs. You may be happy with the rest of your face and just want that area to look less jowly.

HIFU uses focused ultrasound to stimulate collagen and gradually tighten the tissue, helping lift early jowls and define the jawline. Known as the 'lunchtime lift', it lets you get straight back to your day while the firming develops over the months ahead.

What you might be noticing

Your jawline is losing its edge

Often it's a gradual change that becomes obvious when you compare a recent photo with an older one.

Little overhangs beside the chin

The lower cheeks seem to sit a little lower, with small folds interrupting the line of your jaw. You'd like the area to look firmer and less droopy.

The lower face looks heavier

You notice sagging at the sides even though your weight hasn't changed much. The shape looks less defined, rather than simply needing a wrinkle smoothed.

You want tightening without extra volume

You're interested in improving the jawline but aren't sure adding filler is what you need. You'd like to understand what can be achieved by firming your own tissue.

The change to look for

Less sagging along the jawline

As the tissue firms, early jowls can look less obvious and the lower edge of the face can become more defined. The change comes from treating your own tissue rather than building up the area with filler.

Dr Alex looks at the lower face as a whole. Sometimes treating the jawline is enough; sometimes the surrounding lower face or neck should be part of the plan. The improvement builds over several months as the treated tissue becomes firmer.

Is it right for you?

When tightening can make a worthwhile difference

HIFU can suit early sagging, but the cause of the change matters as much as how it looks in a photo.

Mild to moderate looseness
Early jowls and skin that has started to sag can respond to gradual tightening. Dr Alex will assess the skin and underlying support to judge how much improvement HIFU is likely to offer.
A wish to avoid adding volume
HIFU may be appealing if your main concern is loose tissue. If lost support or hollowness is contributing, a different approach may work better than tightening alone.
Time for a gradual result
This suits someone who can allow several months for collagen changes and may be open to a course. It isn't a last-minute way to lift the lower face before an event.

When surgery may offer more

HIFU does not replace a facelift

A substantial fold of loose skin or a much heavier, more dropped lower face usually needs more than collagen stimulation. Dr Alex will explain when a surgical opinion is more likely to match the amount of lifting you're hoping for.

How it works

Encouraging support beneath the skin

HIFU uses focused ultrasound to create small heat points at chosen depths. This stimulates collagen renewal and gradual tightening.

Some of the energy can be directed towards the SMAS, a supporting layer beneath the skin that surgeons work with during many facelifts. HIFU stimulates tissue; it doesn't surgically reposition it. Dr Alex chooses depths and settings for the area, including where useful facial fat should be preserved.

At SONÜ, the HIFU devices Dr Alex uses include Focus Dual, Microson Pen and Ultline. He'll discuss which is appropriate for your treatment when planning the areas to address.

Consultation

Assess the lower face

Dr Alex examines the skin, jowls, jawline and neck, looking at looseness, fat and underlying support. He'll discuss the amount of improvement you want and whether HIFU offers good value for that goal.
Treatment planning

Choose the areas

He agrees whether the jawline alone or a wider lower-face area should be treated. The aim is tightening where it can help, with any fat-reduction work considered separately rather than assumed.
HIFU session

Treat with the handpiece

Gel is applied and the handpiece delivers ultrasound across the planned areas. You may feel pulses of heat, tingling or a deeper ache. Dr Alex checks your comfort as treatment progresses.
Afterwards and review

Allow collagen time to develop

There is usually no time off to organise, although the area may feel tender or look mildly red. Follow your aftercare and allow the result to develop over the following months before judging the full improvement.

Why Dr Alex

Why choose Dr Alex for jowl HIFU?

Dr Alex is a Key Opinion Leader for Eunsung, the manufacturer behind Focus Dual. His work includes teaching medical professionals about HIFU internationally and presenting at IMCAS World Congress in Paris. He has also presented in the UK on his experience with Focus Dual.

For jowls, he considers what has moved, what has lost support and where fat is helping the shape of your face. That guides whether HIFU should tighten the tissue, whether selected fat reduction has a role, or whether another treatment would do more.

Safety and aftercare

Usually little interruption to your day

Mild redness, tenderness or swelling can follow HIFU. Occasionally Dr Alex sees small raised red or scratch-like marks, which generally settle in a day or two.

Possible side effects

Possible complications include burns, altered sensation, nerve injury and unwanted fat loss or contour changes. Dr Alex plans the depth and settings for each area, including where fat needs to be preserved.

When to get urgent help

Contact the clinic promptly for severe or worsening pain, blisters, skin damage, persistent numbness or new weakness affecting your smile. If the clinic is unavailable, seek urgent advice through NHS 111. Rapid swelling with difficulty breathing or swallowing needs emergency help; call 999.

When treatment may not be suitable

Tell Dr Alex about pregnancy or breastfeeding, implanted electronic devices, metal implants in the area, altered sensation, active skin problems and previous facial surgery, filler or threads. These can affect whether and where treatment is appropriate. Don't stop prescribed medicines yourself.

You'll receive aftercare advice and a way to contact the clinic if you are concerned.

Your questions

More about HIFU for jowls

Questions about lifting, keeping facial volume and choosing the right treatment.

How much can HIFU lift jowls?
It can make early jowls less noticeable by firming and tightening the tissue. Dr Alex will assess how much of the sagging is likely to improve and explain the change he would aim for. A heavier fold of loose skin usually needs more lifting than HIFU can offer.
Will it make my face look thinner?
The main aim here is tightening and definition. HIFU can affect fat at certain depths, so Dr Alex plans where fat should be preserved and whether any reduction is useful. Not every jowl is simply a pocket of fat, and unwanted fat loss is a possible complication.
Would filler be better for my jawline?
Filler adds volume or support; HIFU stimulates tightening. If the main issue is sagging, adding more volume along the jaw may not be the change you need. If support or chin shape is contributing, filler may have a role. Dr Alex will explain the difference for your face.
Is this the same as Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is another brand of focused-ultrasound treatment. Dr Alex uses Focus Dual, Microson Pen and Ultline. If you've been reading about Ultherapy, he can explain the differences and which of his devices he recommends for you.
How many sessions do you recommend?
Dr Alex often recommends three where appropriate, with at least a month between sessions. One can still help. The plan depends on the degree of looseness and the change you're looking for, with further treatment considered according to your response.
When will I see the result, and how long does it last?
Some people notice early tightening, but the main change develops over about 3-6 months. The improvement doesn't stop on a fixed date, although ageing continues. Dr Alex will assess whether further treatment would be useful as your face changes; there isn't an automatic maintenance schedule.
Does HIFU hurt?
You may feel brief heat, tingling or an ache beneath the skin, and some points can feel stronger than others. Dr Alex generally finds the discomfort manageable. Tell him how it feels during treatment rather than feeling you have to put up with an uncomfortable setting.
Will I need time off work?
You can normally go straight back to work. HIFU is often called the 'lunchtime lift' because there's no recovery time to set aside, and treatment doesn't leave injection marks. Mild redness or tenderness can occur. If you have an important event immediately afterwards, discuss the timing beforehand.
Can I have it if I already have filler or threads?
Possibly, but Dr Alex needs to know the product, area and timing before planning HIFU. Bring your treatment details if you have them. There isn't one waiting interval that can be applied to every combination.
How is it different from RF microneedling?
HIFU delivers focused ultrasound through the skin without needles. RF microneedling uses fine needles to deliver radiofrequency energy into the skin and may be useful where texture or certain scars are also concerns. Dr Alex will explain which approach, or combination, suits the changes you want.
