Help a visible bruise fade sooner

IPL bruise reduction in Hale, Altrincham

A bruise can be small and still have terrible timing. Targeted IPL may help a post-treatment bruise fade more quickly, with a short light-based treatment and no extra injections.

Perhaps you're pleased with your filler, but the purple mark beside it is getting all the attention. Or there's a meeting, wedding or weekend away coming up and concealer isn't quite doing the job. At SONÜ, Dr Alex can assess the bruise and advise whether IPL could help at this stage. Tell the team when it appeared and what caused it, so they can guide you.

When the timing is awkward

The bruise you could do without

Sometimes you'd simply like to stop thinking about the mark every time you get ready.

A visible mark after injections

A small bruise can happen even with carefully performed treatment. You'd like to know whether anything could help it settle sooner.

Concealer isn't quite covering it

The purple colour still shows through, or you find yourself checking and touching up during the day. Making it less obvious would be useful.

Something in the diary

Photographs, a work event or a celebration can make a bruise feel particularly inconvenient. Tell the team your date so the advice takes your plans into account.

What could change?

Less of a mark to work around

IPL targets the red and purple colour that can make a bruise stand out.

That could mean a mark that's easier to cover or less noticeable while you're out and about. Timing matters: the colour and stage of the bruise affect how useful treatment is likely to be. If it's already fading well, Dr Alex may advise letting it finish settling on its own.

Is it worth treating?

Start with the cause and stage of the bruise

A known, uncomplicated bruise is a different situation from unexplained bruising or an unusual reaction after treatment.

A bruise after cosmetic injections
This is the main situation in which IPL bruise reduction is considered here. Dr Alex will assess the area and what was injected before deciding whether treatment is appropriate.
A fresh red or purple mark
Contact the team soon after it appears. Early assessment can help identify whether light treatment is likely to be useful, without waiting until the bruise has almost gone.
Unexplained bruises or significant swelling
Repeated bruises without a clear cause, a large swollen collection of blood or a bruise after a substantial injury need medical assessment rather than a cosmetic light-treatment booking.

Before booking

A worsening reaction needs prompt advice

If pain is increasing or the skin is becoming pale, grey or mottled after filler, contact the treating clinician immediately. These changes shouldn't be assumed to be an ordinary bruise. Don't wait for an IPL appointment to have them assessed.

How it works

Using light to target the bruise colour

A bruise forms when blood leaks from small vessels into the surrounding tissue. IPL delivers filtered light that can be absorbed by the blood pigments responsible for some of the visible colour.

The treatment uses this light response to encourage faster fading. As a bruise heals, its colour changes, so the timing and settings need to match the skin, the location and the stage of the mark.

Getting help

What to do when a bruise appears

Start by contacting the clinic with the treatment or injury involved, when it happened and where the bruise is.

When you get in touch

Tell the team what happened

Include any medicines that affect bleeding and whether there is pain, swelling or another new symptom. Mention an upcoming event if that's why you're asking.
Before treatment

Have the area assessed

Dr Alex will assess whether this looks like uncomplicated bruising suitable for IPL, whether further medical attention is needed and whether treatment is likely to add anything useful.
If IPL is appropriate

Treat the selected area

Your eyes are protected and light pulses are applied to the agreed area. You may feel brief warmth or hot flicks. The team will explain the likely skin reaction and aftercare.
After treatment

Watch how it settles

Follow the advice from both your original treatment and the IPL appointment. The bruise will still change as it fades; contact the clinic if symptoms worsen or something doesn't look right.

Safety and aftercare

Keep aftercare simple and follow your advice

IPL can leave the treated skin temporarily warm, pink or sensitive. Less common risks include burns, blisters, unwanted pigment changes and scarring.

Possible side effects

Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, supplements, light sensitivity and recent sun exposure. Don't stop prescribed medicines to make a bruise fade or to have IPL unless the clinician managing them advises it. Avoid rubbing the area and follow your individual skincare and sun-protection instructions.

When to get urgent help

After filler, seek immediate assessment for increasing pain, pale or mottled skin, or blistering. Call 999 for any sudden visual change or stroke-like symptoms. A rapidly expanding bruise, severe swelling or significant bleeding also needs urgent medical help. These are not reasons to wait for bruise-reduction treatment.

When IPL is not the next step

Unexplained or frequent bruising needs a GP review, particularly with other bleeding. A significant injury, active infection, broken skin or an unusual post-injection reaction needs appropriate care first. A tan, certain medicines or skin types may also make IPL unsuitable.

New or worsening symptoms should be assessed, even if you were initially told to expect some bruising.

Your questions

What patients want to know about bruise reduction

Especially when you like the treatment result and would just like the bruise to hurry up.

Can IPL really help a bruise fade?
IPL may help the red or purple colour fade sooner in an uncomplicated bruise after filler. Dr Alex will explain whether its current colour, stage and location make treatment a useful option.
How soon should I contact you?
Get in touch soon after the bruise appears and tell the team when the original treatment took place. Early assessment is useful, but you don't need to work out the right timing yourself. Any worsening pain or unusual skin changes after filler need immediate advice from the treating clinician.
Will it be gone by tomorrow or in time for my event?
A clear result by a particular date can't be promised. IPL is intended to help fading, and the skin may also look temporarily pink afterwards. Tell the team your event date so Dr Alex can advise whether treating now is likely to be helpful.
How many sessions will I need?
A targeted session followed by review may be appropriate. Further treatment depends on the response and whether enough bruising remains to make it worthwhile. You won't automatically need the course used for general skin rejuvenation.
Can you treat a bruise from filler done elsewhere?
Contact the team with the date, area, product if known and details of the treating clinic. Dr Alex can advise whether assessment at SONÜ is appropriate. If you're worried about a complication, contact your original clinician immediately rather than waiting for a cosmetic appointment.
Will IPL dissolve my filler?
IPL bruise reduction is intended to target the bruise colour, not dissolve filler. Let Dr Alex know exactly what was injected, where and when, so he can decide whether light treatment is appropriate alongside your recent procedure.
Can it help an old yellow or brown bruise?
As a bruise changes colour, the pigments present change too. A late-stage mark may offer less to target and may already be close to fading on its own. A persistent brown stain or a mark that isn't behaving like a normal bruise needs assessment before choosing treatment.
Does it hurt or create another bruise?
The pulses can feel like quick hot flicks. The skin may be temporarily red or sensitive, and light treatment can occasionally cause bruising itself. Dr Alex will weigh that against the likely benefit for the mark you're hoping to improve.
What if I bruise easily or take blood thinners?
Tell the team before booking. Medicines can affect bruising and the assessment, but you shouldn't stop them on your own. If easy bruising is new, unexplained or accompanied by other bleeding, arrange a GP review first.
Can I cover it with makeup afterwards?
The team will advise when makeup is suitable, taking into account both the original procedure and the IPL treatment. Avoid putting makeup on broken or irritated skin, and apply it gently once you've been told it's appropriate.
