What you have noticed
Vertical cords that catch your eye
Coronation Street fans may recognise the 'Deirdre neck' description - those vertical bands that stand out when you speak or tense your neck.
At a glance
The practical details of neck-band treatment
The treatment aims to reduce the prominence of vertical muscle bands.
What changes
A smoother-looking neck when you are animated
The bands can stand out less strongly, so the neck looks less corded as you talk or smile.
The clearest improvement is often in the muscular bands that become obvious with contraction. Bands visible at rest may soften too, but loose skin can continue to show even when the muscle is more relaxed.
This is a change to the prominence of the cords, not a promise to smooth every line in the neck. Dr Alex will compare the bands in movement and at rest when discussing the result.

Is it right for you?
Are the lines you see muscle bands?
Vertical bands and skin wrinkles can look quite different once you see how they move.
Different neck concerns
Vertical bands are not horizontal neck wrinkles
Lines running across the neck, crepey skin and loose folds don't all come from muscle contraction. Botox for platysmal bands won't remove excess skin. Skin treatments or surgery may be more appropriate when those are the main concerns.
How it works
Relaxing the muscle behind the visible cords
The platysma is a thin muscle beneath the skin of the neck.
Parts of it can become visible as vertical bands, especially when the muscle contracts. Botox temporarily reduces activity in the treated bands, so they pull and stand out less strongly.
The treatment is directed at those superficial bands. It is not intended to weaken the deeper muscles you rely on for moving your neck or swallowing.
Your appointment
Let Dr Alex see the bands in movement
An ordinary smile or expression can be more useful than trying to hold your neck perfectly still.

Why Dr Alex
Experience with toxin, with neck function in mind
Dr Alex trains doctors, dentists and nurses in medical aesthetics. His professional work includes clinical toxin education at the British College of Aesthetic Medicine conference and Aesthetic Medicine North, alongside his role as international Key Opinion Leader and Advocate for Evolus, a company supplying toxin treatments.
For the neck, the visible result needs to be considered alongside normal movement and swallowing. The consultation includes the strength and pattern of the bands, your medical history and whether loose skin is contributing.
If it is mainly the skin rather than the muscle that bothers you, Dr Alex will explain the options that address that instead.

Safety
What are the risks of treating neck bands?
The area-specific risks relate to unwanted weakness in nearby neck muscles.
Possible side effects
Redness, tenderness and bruising can follow the injections. Some people notice that lifting their head from lying flat takes more effort - for example, getting out of bed or during yoga or Pilates. You may still turn and move your head normally, but lifting it off the pillow feels heavier. Let the clinic know if you notice this.
Other unwanted effects can include more marked neck weakness, difficulty swallowing or a change in voice. These need medical advice rather than being dismissed as ordinary settling.
Tell Dr Alex about any existing swallowing or neck problems and previous surgery in the area. The assessment helps determine whether this treatment is suitable for you.
When to seek urgent help
Seek urgent medical assessment for new difficulty swallowing or speaking, marked neck weakness or difficulty keeping your head upright. Call 999 for breathing difficulty or swelling of the tongue or throat.
When treatment may not be suitable
Treatment is generally deferred during pregnancy or breastfeeding and when the skin is infected. A previous serious toxin reaction, certain nerve or muscle disorders, existing neck weakness or swallowing problems and relevant medicines can affect suitability.
You can discuss the benefits and risks before choosing whether to go ahead.
