Horizontal neck lines

Necklace-line filler in Hale, Altrincham

Necklace-line filler softens the horizontal grooves across your neck, helping the skin look smoother and making those persistent lines less obvious.

They might be lines you've had for years, or creases that have gradually become deeper. You straighten up, look ahead, and they're still there.

Often called necklace lines, these horizontal folds can be treated with small amounts of hyaluronic acid filler to support the skin along the indentation. The aim is to soften the groove so it doesn't stand out as much against the surrounding skin.

Dr Alex will assess the depth of the lines and the skin around them, then explain the improvement you could expect.

The lines you notice

Creases that stay when you look straight ahead

Horizontal neck lines aren't only an age-related change. Some have been there since you were young; others become more noticeable over time.

One or two deeper lines

A few horizontal grooves stand out more than the skin around them. You'd like to soften those specific creases, rather than change the shape of your whole neck.

Lines that have gradually deepened

The folds seem more etched in than they used to. Skincare may keep your neck comfortable and hydrated, but the indentations still catch your eye.

You've always had necklace lines

You can remember seeing them long before you were thinking about ageing. You'd like to know whether those longstanding lines can be made less obvious too.

The result

Lines that stand out less across your neck

Filler can make a horizontal groove shallower, giving a smoother transition between the crease and the skin either side of it.

You may want one especially deep crease softened, or a more even appearance across several lines. Dr Alex will discuss how much smoothing is realistic and which grooves are likely to respond best.

Your neck will still fold as you move. A line that appears when you look down isn't the same as a deep groove that remains when your head is upright; the treatment focuses on those persistent indentations.

Would it suit you?

Are you treating lines or loose skin?

A distinct horizontal indentation is a different concern from a generally crepey neck, loose skin or vertical muscle bands.

Defined horizontal grooves
Filler may suit lines that remain visible with your head in a normal upright position. Dr Alex assesses their depth and whether the surrounding skin can support a smooth correction.
Longstanding lines
A line doesn't have to be new to be worth assessing. Natural folds can be present from a young age, and treatment may soften their appearance without trying to remove normal neck movement.
Lines alongside other skin changes
If you have distinct grooves as well as fine crepiness or some loss of firmness, more than one treatment may be useful. Dr Alex will explain which would address the change you most want to improve.

A different concern

Filling a line won't lift a loose neck

Filler doesn't remove excess skin or relax prominent vertical neck bands. Significant sagging may need a surgical opinion, while muscle bands or more general skin-quality changes have other treatment options. Adding more gel to a crease won't correct those separate problems.

How it works

Supporting the skin along the groove

Small amounts of hyaluronic acid gel are placed to reduce the indentation of a horizontal neck line.

As the groove becomes shallower, the change in level between the line and surrounding skin is less obvious. That can soften both the crease and the shadow it creates.

The neck has thin skin and moves frequently, so the filler needs to suit that tissue. Dr Alex chooses the product and amount after assessing the lines, rather than treating every groove to the same depth of correction.

This is direct support from a gel. It doesn't switch off the muscles or produce the lift of a neck operation.

Your appointment

Show Dr Alex the lines you want to soften

He'll examine your neck at rest and as it moves, so the recommendation reflects how it looks in everyday life.

At consultation

Assess the lines and skin

Explain which creases bother you and how long they've been there. Dr Alex will look at their depth, the surrounding skin and any previous treatment, including filler or other injectables.
Before treatment

Discuss the likely smoothing

He'll explain which lines filler could improve, whether another approach would help more, and the product, risks and cost. You can discuss how visible the recovery might be if you're planning around an event.
During the injections

Treat the horizontal grooves

Dr Alex places the filler along the areas needing support. His HA filler contains lidocaine to help with comfort, and additional numbing can be discussed. Let him know if you need a pause.
Afterwards

Let the result settle

You'll receive advice on caring for the skin and when to assess the result. Dr Alex normally leaves at least a month before considering additional filler in the same area. Any concerning change should be raised straight away.

Why Dr Alex

Why choose Dr Alex for necklace-line filler?

Dr Alex teaches doctors, dentists and nurses across several dermal filler ranges. He is currently a trainer for Evolus's Estyme filler range and has helped launch Estyme and Aliaxin LV in the UK.

For neck lines, product choice and the amount of correction need to suit thin, mobile skin. He'll assess the groove itself as well as how the surrounding skin folds, so the recommendation is aimed at a smoother appearance in normal movement.

If you've had injections in the neck before, he'll check what was used and how the area has responded. The next treatment should build on that assessment, rather than simply repeat what was done last time.

Side effects and suitability

What should you know about recovery and risks?

Injection marks, bruising, tenderness and swelling can be visible after treatment. Small raised areas may show more readily through the thin skin of the neck.

Possible side effects

Unevenness, persistent lumps or a bluish tint can occur if filler shows through the skin. Infection and delayed inflammatory reactions are also possible. Any lump that persists or becomes painful needs assessment.

A blocked blood vessel is an uncommon but serious complication that can damage the skin.

When to seek urgent help

Contact SONÜ urgently for unusual or increasing pain, or skin turning pale, grey, dusky or mottled. Seek urgent medical care if you cannot reach the clinic. Rapid neck or throat swelling, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, requires emergency help - call 999.

When treatment may need to wait

Active infection, broken skin or an inflamed rash in the area needs assessment first. Tell Dr Alex about allergies, medicines, previous filler reactions, pregnancy or breastfeeding and any relevant medical condition or neck surgery.

You can take time to consider the recommendation before deciding on treatment.

If a separate skin treatment would also help, its purpose and fee will be explained before you decide. Having lines, crepiness and laxity together doesn't mean you have to treat everything.

Your questions

Questions about horizontal neck-line filler

Answers about the result, the recovery and how filler compares with other neck treatments.

What are necklace lines?
They're the horizontal folds or grooves running across the neck. They may be present from a young age or become deeper over time. Treatment aims to soften persistent indentations, rather than prevent the skin from folding when you move.
Is this treatment for 'tech neck'?
If you mean persistent horizontal neck creases, filler may help their appearance. Looking down can emphasise a fold, but not every line is caused by a phone or posture. If you mean neck pain or stiffness, that needs a different assessment.
Should I have Botox or filler for my neck?
It depends on the change you're treating. Filler supports suitable horizontal grooves. Botox relaxes muscle activity and may be used for prominent vertical platysmal bands or downward pull. Dr Alex will assess the lines and movement before recommending either.
Can it erase the lines completely?
A softer, shallower line is a more realistic aim. Deep folds may remain visible, and your neck will still crease as it moves. Dr Alex will explain how much improvement he expects from the lines and skin you have.
How long does necklace-line filler last?
Dr Alex's usual guide for most HA fillers is 12-18 months of visible improvement. The product used for your lines and your response can change that estimate. He'll assess the result before recommending a repeat treatment, rather than topping up automatically.
Will it make my neck look lumpy?
The aim is a smooth correction, although small raised areas or swelling can be visible initially. Persistent lumps and unevenness are possible complications, particularly where filler shows through thin skin. Follow your aftercare instructions and contact the clinic if an area isn't settling or becomes painful.
Does necklace-line filler hurt?
The injections can sting. The filler contains local anaesthetic, and Dr Alex can discuss additional numbing to help with comfort. Tell him if you are nervous or have found injections uncomfortable before.
Can I treat neck lines if I'm still young?
Adult patients can have horizontal neck lines long before other signs of ageing. Suitability depends on the actual grooves, the skin and your health, rather than reaching a particular birthday. Normal lines don't need treatment unless you want to explore changing them.
How is this different from Profhilo or polynucleotides?
Filler places support directly into a contour or indentation. Profhilo and polynucleotides are generally used to improve skin quality, with different products and treatment plans. They may help when hydration or crepiness is the main concern, but they don't necessarily correct a distinct deep groove in the same way.
Can I have it before a wedding or holiday?
Allow time for visible marks, swelling or bruising to settle, and tell the clinic your date when booking. Dr Alex can advise on timing, sun exposure and any other treatment you're planning. Avoid leaving a first treatment until the last few days before an important occasion.
